Bugis Street Hall
Founded in the 1950s, the Bugis Street Market is still bustling with activity in the modern era with many customers visiting the place daily for street food like egg tarts and fashionable clothing. It’s refreshing to see the people of all ages come to sample the goods offered in the market.
Queen Street
Walking along the streets of Bugis, we can see the row of candy-coloured staircases jutting out the back of traditional shophouses. They were meant as fire escape routes for night soil carriers, but these days, their cheerful, retro-color aesthetic makes them stand out in the middle of the buildings, turning it into a popular spot for Instagram photos.
Hakka Yam Cake
The area is home to many new and old franchises that sell everything you would ever want to eat! The hakka abacus yam cake is one of Singapore’s traditional food which that is still enjoyed by many today.
Stall-keeper in Bugis Street
The market gives us with a sense of authenticity, with shopkeepers hard at work to keep up with the intense demand from the overwhelming numbers of customers who wants a taste of the tasty kueh fresh out of the steamer. The chewy and sweet texture of the various kueh is an addicting and satisfying treat.
A Trip Down the Memory Lane
chinatown

Chinatown's maze of narrow roads includes Chinatown Food Street, with its restaurants serving traditional fare like Hainanese chicken rice, noodles and satay. Souvenir shops and indie boutiques dot the area, offering clothes, crafts and antiques. These nostalgic areas are hard to come by as of late, due to the rapid urban development of Singapore.
It is now quite rare to see uncles playing the classic checkers in HDB void decks due to the pandemic, but it is still a treat when you catch a glimpse of them laser-focused on an intense game of strategy and resilience.
Our parents would recount a time where the green glass coke bottles were seen in every store, but now, it has been replaced by a cheaper, yet striking red can. Without the weighted feel of glass in their hands, they always said that the drink felt different. However, one thing remains the same for both the younger and older generations, which are fruit and drink stall uncles making cold drinks to quench our thirsts. The wide variety of fruit juice is always seen as superior to sugary fizzy drinks as it brings a wave of familiarity and nostalgia of childhood.
